چکیده

l. Results of a study on lethal and sublethal responses of different size groups of the tropical brown mussel, Perna indica, when exposed to different temperatures are presented. 2. Exposure to a temperature of 38°C showed 100% mortality of 9 mm size group mussels in 120 min. 3. Mortality was dependent on age (size) of the mussels, young ones being more susceptible than older ones. 4. All size groups showed a progressive reduction in physiological activities such as filtration rate, foot activity and byssus thread production when temperature was increased from 30°C. 5. This study suggests that heat treatment is an attractive alternative to chlorination for mussel fouling control in tropical power stations. Key Word Index: Power station; Perna indica; fouling control; heat treatment; mortality; filtration rate; foot activity; byssus thread production

Reduced glutathione and acetylcholinesterase expressions in Perna indica exposed to trivalent arsenic

In the present study Indian brown mussel, Perna indica was exposed to 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 ppb (μg/l) arsenic concentrations under short-term chronic toxicity bioassay (14 days) for the assessment of reduced glutathione and acetylcholinesterase as potential biochemical biomarkers in arsenic pollution. A higher level of reduced glutathione (GSH) and increased acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activ...

Field Measurements Indicate Unexpected, Serious Underestimation of Mussel Heart Rates and Thermal Tolerance by Laboratory Studies

Attempts to predict the response of species to long-term environmental change are generally based on extrapolations from laboratory experiments that inevitably simplify the complex interacting effects that occur in the field. We recorded heart rates of two genetic lineages of the brown mussel Perna perna over a full tidal cycle in-situ at two different sites in order to evaluate the cardiac res...

Cheating the Locals: Invasive Mussels Steal and Benefit from the Cooling Effect of Indigenous Mussels

The indigenous South African mussel Perna perna gapes during periods of aerial exposure to maintain aerobic respiration. This behaviour has no effect on the body temperatures of isolated individuals, but when surrounded by conspecifics, beneficial cooling effects of gaping emerge. It is uncertain, however, whether the presence of the invasive mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis limits the ability ...

Design of Zebra Mussel Control Measures for Hydro-Electric Power Projects

Zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, is a biofouling organism that lives generally in freshwater ecosystems. Zebra mussel infestation has occurred at various freshwater structures and systems including raw water intakes, industrial and domestic distribution pipelines, and hydropower facilities at its native regions as well as distant locations. A study was conducted to perform risk assessment an...

Seasonal variation of fucoxanthin content in four species of brown seaweeds from Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf and evaluation of their antibacterial and antioxidant activities

Fucoxanthin contents of four species of brown seaweeds (Dictyota indica, Padina tenuis, Colpomenia sinuosa and Iyengaria stellata) from intertidal zone of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf were assessed in summer and winter of 2016. In addition, some physicochemical properties (pH, temperature, salinity and conductivity) of seawater were monitored on the same time. The antibacterial activity of algal ...
